Threshold Reference · Sensitivity vs False Alert Rate
Alert Level Trigger Condition Sensitivity False Alert Rate Action
MODERATE Kp ≥ 4.0 for ≥ 2 consecutive 3hr periods 57% (4/7 clusters) 20% of non-seizure days Heightened awareness · minimize stress · no visitors · monitor closely
HIGH Kp ≥ 5.0 any single 3hr reading 43% (3/7 clusters) 16% of non-seizure days Full protocol · melatonin PM · verify magnesium dose · quiet environment
EXTREME Kp ≥ 7.0 — G3+ storm 0% (0/7 clusters) 6% of non-seizure days Note: Theodulf did not seize during the G4–G5 events (Nov 2025, Jan 2026)
⚠ Max sensitivity ceiling = 57%. Sep 25, Dec 19, Mar 17 were geomagnetically quiet — those clusters are driven by other triggers. Kp is a co-trigger, not a universal predictor. Use alongside barometric pressure and humidity data.
Mitigation Protocol · When Kp Is Elevated
⚠ Moderate Alert · Kp ≥ 4.0 × 2 periods
Heightened Awareness
  • No visitors or new people in the home
  • Maintain strict feeding / medication schedule
  • Quiet environment — minimize arousal events
  • Extended grounding time (grass/soil, 20–30 min)
  • Verify evening magnesium glycinate dose is not missed
  • Log current Kp value in seizure diary
🔴 High Alert · Kp ≥ 5.0
Full Pre-Seizure Protocol
  • All Moderate actions plus:
  • Administer melatonin (1.5–3 mg, immediate release) that evening
  • No grooming, vet appointments, or boarding
  • No high-arousal play or exercise
  • Rescue medication accessible and confirmed
  • Confirm neurologist contact is available
Mechanism · Why geomagnetic storms affect seizure threshold
Geomagnetic storms suppress nocturnal melatonin via cryptochrome-mediated HPA axis activation. Suppressed melatonin lowers the threshold for hippocampal/amygdala seizure discharge propagation. The mitigation strategy targets this pathway directly — melatonin supplementation during storm windows, magnesium (NMDA antagonist) to block calcium flux, and stress minimization to avoid HPA co-activation.
